Technology Spotlight: Bluebeam Revu

by Andrew Mitchell, Associate AIA, Project Designer, MKSD Architects

Bluebeam Revu is a software application that allows users to view, markup, takeoff, organize, and collaborate with PDF files; imagine Adobe Acrobat, but on steroids. Bluebeam has been adopted by a wide range of industries, including construction, architecture, engineering, manufacturing, and many others. At MKSD, we have adopted Bluebeam Revu as our default PDF software. The built-in tools and functions allow MKSD to markup, communicate, present, measure/takeoff, and process submittals & Requests for Information (RFIs).

Markup:

Bluebeam Revu allows us to digitally plot drawings and markup a full drawing set with ease. The built-in markup tools allow project designers, managers, and construction administrators to digitally review and redline drawings without printing. This has helped MKSD cut down on paper use & places the markups on the screen of the designer, rather than on the desk making telecommuting much easier.

Communicate:

Bluebeam Revu facilitates communication with our clients, engineers, and contractors. With Bluebeam Revu’s built-in tools, MKSD can quickly and efficiently markup send out responses to RFIs, client questions, and coordinate details. Although it does not replace trace paper and the felt-tipped pen, Bluebeam Revu allows designers to digitally think through and communicate their thoughts.

Present:

With Bluebeam Revu’s Studio function, project designers, managers, and construction administrators can effectively present design documents to clients, contractors, engineers, and building officials. Think about screen sharing, without the video component. With Bluebeam Revu Studio’s browser-based platform, anyone, from anywhere, can login and follow along. The built-in tools also allow the presenter to markup, measure, and do accurate takeoffs during the presentation while everyone is watching.

Measure/takeoff:

Bluebeam Revu’s measure & takeoff functions allow the design staff to quickly, and effectively, measure and do takeoffs and area calculations from design documents. Energy modeling and shop drawings have never been easier!

Submittals/RFIs:

Utilizing all of Bluebeam Revu’s built-in tools project designers, managers, and construction administrators can quickly markup, measure, takeoff, and process submittals & RFIs easier than ever. The markup and measure tools allow the design staff to effectively communicate design intent during shop drawing review.
