St. Luke’s University Health Network Sacred Heart Streetscape, Emergency Department and Entry Improvements
With a long history serving center city Allentown, struggling Sacred Heart Hospital was purchased by the St. Luke’s University Health Network. Knowing the importance of providing quality health care to an underserved population, SLUHN undertook a Master Plan with MKSD that specifically addresses the Main and ED entrances and streetscape.
After analysis and assessment of the existing conditions, MKSD identified specific deficiencies in the entrances and patient drop-off areas, patient flow into the buildings from the surrounding neighborhoods and access from the parking deck. MKSD made recommendations to expand both entrances, improve the patient drop-off area and add canopies to both areas. MKSD also made aesthetic suggestions that will more clearly tie this building to the SLUHN brand aesthetic. The design solution improves patient safety, accessibility to the buildings and creates new ‘front doors’ to the hospital that convey a more welcoming image in the community.
