SOUTH WHITEHALL TWP., Pa. –

It sat vacant for years, but a 17 acre area in South Whitehall Township is ready for some foot traffic.  St. Luke’s redeveloped the former warehouse into a brand new outpatient medical facility.  St. Luke’s West End Medical Center had its grand opening Thursday.

Crews have been working to transform the 108,000 square foot building for the last seven months.  So far, only about a quarter of the building is being used.

“This is our future,” shared St. Luke’s Allentown Campus President Frank Ford.  “It’s going to be a longer term project, maybe 6 or 7 years until we’re fully built out.”

But patients are already being helped.  St. Luke’s QuickCare, occupational medicine, lab services, x-rays and ultrasounds, and OB-GYN Care associates are using 28,000 square feet of the building.

“We’re going to put together a mix of services at this location that offers a full range of services for St. Luke’s in this strategic location,” said Ford.

The region’s first Pediatric Urgent Care center provided by St. Christopher’s Hospital will open mid-July with seven exam rooms.  But that’s just the beginning.

“We have 35 outpatient properties in the Allentown, Western Lehigh County market,” explained Ford.  “The purpose of this project is to consolidate some of those properties.”

Next month construction inside will start on a pain management center and a sports and human performance gym.  They’re both set to open in September.
