MKSD participates in Lehigh Valley Volunteer Challenge

MKSD architects is one of several Lehigh Valley businesses to participate in this year’s Lehigh Valley Volunteer Challenge.

The Volunteer Challenge is an invitation only corporate competition in which company sponsored teams conceive, design and complete projects for local nonprofit agencies. Projects are either self-selected by the organization or by project opportunities identified by the Volunteer Center. The projects were required to be sustainable and must be completed between February 17th and May 2nd.

MKSD architects chose to create a “Reading Nook” at the Salvation Army – Allentown Corps. The challenge was to create a study/reading area to benefit the afterschool and day camp programs. The current platform was an unused and outdated space. Help was needed to replace tiles and carpeting, build bookshelves and cubbies for books and/or put in shelves, add hooks for children to hang their coats and book bags. “This space is available and in need of loving care to give our children a space to read quietly or complete their homework.”

After collecting donations from some of our generous vendors and creating a plan for the space, MKSD staff rolled up their sleeves and got to work!

It all paid off. The resulting room is a bright, comfortable space for the afterschool and day camp program children to read quietly, complete their homework and engage in small group activities with the Salvation Army Corps staff.
