MKSD Office Wins AIA Award of Excellence

MKSD architects’ corporate office won a 2008 Design Award of Excellence in the commercial design category at the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Eastern Pennsylvania President’s Night program on December 4, 2008, at The Farmhouse Restaurant in Emmaus. The firm’s office at 1209 Hausman Road in Allentown was a design/build project that renovated an existing 13,123-square-foot shell building and 6,562 square feet of interiors for one of two final tenant suites.

Juror Gregory K. Hunt, FAIA, commented on the 1209 Hausman Road project, “The remarkable transformation of the existing building is achieved through simple but eloquent means – especially in the light-filled and spatially generous central space that has been inserted. The nighttime photos are particularly beguiling and reveal the architect’s thoughtful attention to the nocturnal role of lighting and color in the landscape.”

MKSD redeveloped the former office building into two separate and autonomous offices with some shared spaces—a new entryway, a conference room, public restrooms, and a staff break room/kitchen. The interior tenant fitout was performed for MSKD architects (the tenant) and features a reception area, an open studio workspace, offices, a large conference room with a service kitchen, a lounge area, and storage. Renovation designs included partial window replacements, a new entrance, and a new raised roof conference room; new common space amenities; and new mechanical, electrical, telecommunications, and plumbing systems.
